Introduction

The ancient pre-Inca civilizations cultures (600 BC. – 1000 AC.) such as Paracas, Nasca, Ica-Chincha, and Wari, developed on the southern coast of ancient Perù, believed in a life after death. That is why tomb looters also called “huaqueros” and archaeologists found hundreds of mummies wrapped in their finest fabrics, along to ceramics and utensils of their daily life in the southern valleys. These mummies were thought to be reborn in a new life, reason why they were buried as they came into the world “fetal position”. The tombs in which these mummies were; Tombs have 2-7 meters deep, built with clay-sand adobes, and enclosed with several trunks of huarango (kind of tree).

ITINERARY

Description:

At the coordinated time, our local guide will pick you up from your hotel to start the trip to the south of Nazca towards the Chauchilla Archaeological Complex "Pre-Inca Cemetery". This necropolis was looted 80 years ago by the “huaqueros” or thieves of Tombs, who sold items in the black market. Today, you can still see real mummies in the fetal position keeping their hair really large. These mummies are also covered in robes, accompanied by agricultural products, tools, and ceramics used in their daily life. All which is part of an ancient belief of the life after death, for which corpses would have to be buried with their belongings. We will walk around several tombs located in different directions, which allows a museum like feeling in the open-air.
On our way back to the city we will visit a ceramic workshop. In this workshop, you can appreciate original two thousand year old potteries, as well as, the ancient technique of ceramic work done by the members of a local family who mold, paint, polish, and carry the product to an artisan oven, to be later purchased as souvenir.
